Our world-renowned center is changing the face of cardiovascular care, pioneering new treatments and leading the way in testing devices and drug therapies. We serve as a catalyst for innovation allowing early stage ideas to move through preclinical development and into human trials.
“Medical innovation requires the expert integration of research, engineering and regulatory capabilities. At Skirball, we set the stage for new treatments and technologies that will translate into early patient studies, resulting in longer, healthier lives.”
Juan F. Granada, MD, Executive Director and Chief Innovation Officer
The goal of translational research is to bring an innovative concept into human applications. Our multidisciplinary team develops the strategies and tactics needed to navigate and facilitate this process.
Today, less invasive catheter-based therapies are being used with great success on complex medical conditions with many promising technologies in the pipeline. As the biomedical innovation field continues to evolve, it becomes even more important to be able to adapt quickly and have a full understanding of this complex process.
The CRF Skirball Center for Innovation (SCI) serves as a catalyst for the development of disruptive biomedical innovation. Our platform is uniquely qualified to guide new technologies from initial experimental validation to early human clinical studies. We partner with various educational and development institutions giving us access to a wide-range of international thought leaders. This along with our expert team of physician-scientists and our strong academic orientation sets SCI apart.
Our regulatory expertise is an integral part of the innovation and development process. Everything at the CRF Skirball Center for Innovation (SCI) is planned, designed and executed with the ultimate goal of transitioning your technology to human application.
Partnering with us allows you to optimize the entire development process so that you can plan for and meet established milestones. Customized research approaches and models are created in collaboration with regulatory bodies to answer relevant questions faster and more efficiently.
SCI meets the highest regulatory standards. We are accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC), as well as compliant with the Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW) and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) regulations. These guidelines govern non-clinical studies and ensure the quality, integrity, and reliability of study data.
The CRF Skirball Center for Innovation (SCI) has a strong track record of success in advancing technologies and treatments from translational research performed in its preclinical laboratories to first-in-human trials. Once safety and feasibility are proven in preclinical studies, we can effectively transition your technology into first-in-human trials through our international network of experienced clinical research centers. Our physician leaders remain involved throughout the process by providing their insight and experience gained during animal testing to the training and guidance of local physician investigators.
Thanks to this unique model of advancing medical innovation worldwide, over 20 different technologies evaluated at SCI have reached the first-in-man phase or received a CE Mark, IDE or FDA market clearance since our opening in 2005.
We believe in the paramount role that rigorous research, feedback and education play in the innovation process. The cycle of innovation at the CRF Skirball Center for Innovation (SCI) continues by collecting invaluable feedback and input from our in-house physicians and external key opinion leaders, and using it to improve and advance the development of your technology.
We are also committed to educating the next generation of physicians in this rapidly progressing field of minimally invasive catheter based therapies. SCI is uniquely equipped for physician training and education. We can provide hands-on experience and virtual training through our animal and benchtop laboratories and meeting rooms with global broadcasting capabilities.
Expert training is crucial for the growth and development of clinicians and researchers. SCI regularly conducts training and educational sessions to meet the dynamic challenges of medical innovation and to better prepare physicians in using novel devices or specialized therapies in their clinical practice.
