Drug-eluting Stents

The field of interventional cardiology has made great strides in developing innovative treatments that have changed the lives of heart patients around the world. These are just some of the major advancements in which CRF played a role in the last two decades.

Stents are small wire mesh tubes that keep clogged arteries open after an angioplasty, a non-surgical procedure that opens up blood flow in a blocked artery.

After an angioplasty, all stents are at risk of developing scar tissue which can clog the arteries again and block blood flow. Drug-eluting stents are coated with medicine which is slowly released into the artery to help prevent re-blockages and repeat angioplasties.

Today, approximately 75% of all stents placed during an angioplasty are drug-eluting stents.
