New York, NY – March 31, 2016 – The Cardiovascular Research Foundation (CRF) announced today that Daniel Burkhoff, MD, PhD, has returned to the organization as Director of Heart Failure, Hemodynamics and Circulatory Support in the CRF Clinical Trials Center (CTC).

A world-renowned expert in heart failure and hemodynamics, Dr. Burkhoff will focus his efforts on advancing hemodynamic education, and will collaborate on heart failure research initiatives across all divisions of CRF. Dr. Burkhoff is the creator of the Harvi simulator, an interactive application that gives healthcare providers a better understanding of the fundamentals of hemodynamics. It was designed to help educate physicians at all levels of training on hemodynamics and to assist them in predicting the effects of different therapies, as well as aid in patient selection for new device therapies. Dr. Burkhoff will work with the CRF Center for Education (CED) to develop novel curricula using Harvi in educational programs for practicing physicians, fellows, and medical students around the world.

His work underscores the value of understanding the role of circulatory support and unloading the LV in relation to myocardial recovery and high risk PCI procedures. Dan’s efforts will undoubtedly change the way cardiovascular physiology is taught and applied to the everyday treatment of patients suffering from heart disease.”

Dr. Burkhoff was instrumental in the creation of the CRF Skirball Center for Innovation, and served as Director when it opened in 2005. He is an Adjunct Associate Professor at Columbia University. Before returning to CRF, he was Vice President of Medical Science for HeartWare International. Previously, he has served as Medical Director of CircuLite and Cheetah Medical. He received his medical and doctor of philosophy degrees from The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and completed his cardiology fellowship at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.
